Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
