Los Angeles Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just Days Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now seeing unseasonably hot weather for the end of February.
All-Time High Temperatures
During the day Friday, the thermometer climbed to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, per data from weather officials. This breaks the prior high for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded just last year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official graphics for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in mercury follows closely after a intense winter storm that struck the region last week. That event brought high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the conditions also triggered a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict some relief will arrive. Readings were expected to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by late Friday.
Additional areas that hit the 90-degree mark featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to reach the high 80s.
In the coming days, downtown LA can anticipate readings in the 80s, with cooler weather expected for the start of March.
