Sovereign to Broadcast Personal Statement on Illness in Nationwide Address
King Charles has filmed a personal message about his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's fundraising initiative, organised by medical research organisations and a television broadcaster.
Buckingham Palace stated the King would talk about his "path to recovery" as a person living with the disease, in a video message on Friday at 20:00 GMT.
The message, recorded at a royal residence two weeks ago, will emphasise the vital significance of routine screenings to help guarantee more people detect the disease at an early stage.
This will be a uncommon insight on the medical condition of the Monarch, who has been undergoing regular treatment since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. However, it is believed improbable the King will specify his particular diagnosis.
Awareness Central Purpose
The annual charity initiative each year raises funds for medical research and patient care and prompts people to get check-ups to boost the odds of an early diagnosis.
The King's candid approach about his condition, and managing the disease, has been intended to increase understanding and to persuade more people to get tested - and this will be advanced with this unique personal contribution.
So far the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, preserving a full diary alongside his frequent sessions of therapy, and he is understood not to have sought to be defined by his illness.
This year has seen the King, 77, embarking on several international tours, notably to Italy and Canada, and hosting the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for a generation, which included the German president recently.
The Televised Evening Programme
This Friday's charity programme on Channel 4, presented by well-known figures such as several TV personalities, will encourage people not to be frightened of getting cancer checks.
All three have been had experience with cancer - one host said recently she had had an operation for the disease, while another presenter was treated for thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously spoken about his late father, who had stomach cancer and then later blood cancer.
The programme will reach out to the roughly 9m people in the UK who health organisations says are not current with public health checks, with an website to let people see if they are able for examinations for key health indicators.
In an attempt to explain screenings and show the importance of early diagnosis there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.
"The goal is to reduce the stigma from cancer screening and demonstrate all people that they are not isolated in this," commented a presenter.
The Landscape of Health Checks
Right now in the UK, there are three publicly available checks - for specific cancers - available to eligible individuals.
A new lung cancer screening programme is also being slowly rolled out for people at potential risk of contracting the illness, specifically targeting people of a certain age, who currently smoke or have smoked in the past.
Individuals may discuss prostate cancer checks, but there is lacking a standardised service currently available.
Funding Research
The fundraising initiative, which has collected £113m over the past decade, is supporting dozens of research studies with many patients.
King Charles, in a statement for attendees at a event for related organisations in the spring, had spoken of acknowledging the "daunting and at times scary situation" for cancer sufferers and their loved ones.
But he said his first-hand encounter of managing cancer had shown him that "the most difficult times of sickness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion," as he thanked those who looked after individuals with the illness.
The Palace has not made public the nature of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has been given. The King's cancer was discovered after he had had a prostate procedure.
