The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This significant achievement follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated wildfire risks and strained its huge agribusiness.

An Update Reveals An Absence of Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is clear of any level of drought. This shift resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that helped fill major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes well above their historic averages.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, leading to significant overflow, power outages, and fatalities. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, pockets like Modoc County were still classified as experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January eliminated those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow indicate it is only about 70% of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers point out that it is premature to make predictions for the months ahead.

“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the months to come.
