The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
