The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
