The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background assisted us verify the footage.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
