He earned the NBA's Most Valuable Player honor in three of the past four years.

Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

Jokic injured himself in the latter stages of the opening half in an inadvertent contact with fellow Nugget Jones.

His teammate came down on the foot of the MVP, who instantly went down to the floor grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, who tops the NBA this season in rebounds and assists, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the game prior to sustaining the problem.

Jokic is scheduled for an MRI on the following day to evaluate the seriousness of the injury.

"Instantly, Jokic knew something was wrong," commented Denver coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever who suffers an injury, it's gut-wrenching, most notably somebody as special as Jokic. We will know more tomorrow."

"We will continue together. Of course, at this moment, I'm more worried about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of going through a situation of that nature."
