US Armed Forces Executes Lethal Strike in Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
According to a senior military official, the American armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Strikes
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered growing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.
While the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
